Decentralized Islamic Finance in Transport and Logistics

Introduction: The Need for Sharia-Compliant Financing in Transport and Logistics

The transport and logistics sector globally faces massive financing challenges, as shipping and logistics companies require liquidity to purchase vehicles, lease warehouses, and operate supply chains. Traditional interest-based financing (riba) is prohibited in Islamic Sharia, creating a financing gap for nearly 1.9 billion Muslims. This is where Islamic decentralized finance (DeFi) steps in, offering innovative solutions through smart contracts while ensuring compliance with Sharia principles such as avoiding uncertainty (gharar) and sharing risks.

Smart Contracts as a Tool for Islamic Decentralized Finance

Smart contracts on the Base platform enable transparent and secure financial transactions without intermediaries. In the 'Qist' model, the seller (e.g., a transport company) owns the asset (e.g., a truck) and sells it to the buyer via installment payments, with installments paid in the stablecoin USDC. All contract terms: a 3-day grace period, no late fees (as they would be riba), and surplus refunded for early repayment. The contract is verified on BaseScan for full transparency.

Advantages of Decentralized Finance in Transport and Logistics

First: speed of execution - no need for banks or lengthy approvals. Second: lower cost - only 2% fee compared to traditional financing fees of 10% or more. Third: transparency - the smart contract is open source and verifiable by anyone. Fourth: global access - anyone anywhere can use the service as long as they have internet access and USDC.

Challenges and Solutions in Applying Smart Contracts to the Logistics Sector

The primary challenge is ensuring the seller actually owns the asset and that there is no gharar (ambiguity) in the contract. Solution: asset ownership is verified through digital signatures or blockchain (e.g., an NFT representing the asset). Another challenge is the volatility of stablecoins; however, USDC is pegged to the dollar, reducing risk. Additionally, Sharia compliance requires approval from Islamic supervisory bodies.

How Qist Implements That

The 'Qist' platform provides an integrated solution: First, the seller lists the asset on the platform with proof of ownership. Second, the user signs a smart contract specifying the total price, installment period (with a 3-day grace period), and any surplus refunded for early repayment. Payments are made in USDC installments, with no late fees. The contract is available on BaseScan for verification, and the service fee is only 2%.
